Rebooting natural and engineered bacteriophages

Bacteriophages are natural predators of bacteria, suitable for a wide range of applications including phage therapy to treat multidrug-resistant bacteria, modifying the gut microbiome, as biosensors for the presence of bacteria, and for the delivery of drugs and nucleic acids. Engineered phages can also be intentionally evolved to infect new hosts and used to deliver CRISPR-Cas enzymes and guide RNAs to targeted bacteria. Working with phages can be challenging due to the need for a host cell for phage growth and the difficulty of transforming such hosts with a natural or engineered genome.
