Associate Computational Scientist

A successful candidate will have strong programming skills in multiple languages and familiarity with database design and management. They will also be familiar with a range of existing industry-standard genomic bioinformatic techniques operated via command line and computational analysis of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) datasets to derive technical and biological insights. While they report to the R&D Manager, specific activities will be managed by the Bioinformatics Lead in R&D and in collaboration with Genomics Services to deliver products.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Work collaboratively with the R&D and Genomics Services team to develop new bioinformatics products and improve quality and performance of existing workflows.
• Support bioinformatics service projects by participating in consulting, workflow design, and client reporting. Deploy tools on both local computer infrastructure and Google Cloud Platform.
• Maintain and improve a client-facing web portal.
• Learn new programming languages as needed. Develop and deploy software tools for various company operational activities. Track and manage development activities ensuring timely delivery on development tasks.
• Produce high quality and detailed documentation for all projects.

Qualifications & Experience:

• At least 1 year of experience working with genomics bioinformatics techniques and data analysis.
• Strong proficiency in coding in at least two relevant programming languages (i.e. Python, Java, Perl, R, shell scripting, etc.).
• Demonstrated bioinformatics pipeline development supporting multiple NGS applications (WGS, targeted capture, RNA-seq, etc.).
• Proficiency in various open source and commercial bioinformatics resources and software.
• Experience working with at least one workflow orchestration software (Cromwell, Nextflow, etc.).
• Deep knowledge of High-Performance Cluster (HPC) environments and cloud computing platforms. Google Cloud Platform experience preferred.
• Experience with Flask or other web interface frameworks.
• Intellectual curiosity and passion for learning new technologies and programming languages.
• Strong technical communication skills.
• Creative, energetic, and self-motivated.

Education:
• Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent industry experience, in life sciences / biotechnology with a bioinformatics emphasis. Master’s degree preferred.
