This study, completed by researchers from the FDA, demonstrates how targeted metagenomics, powered by myBaits® hybridization capture, enables sensitive, species-level detection of arthropod contaminants in food. By enriching mitochondrial DNA and reducing food-matrix background, the workflow significantly improves target detection—even at low abundance and in complex samples. Combined with a k-mer–based analysis pipeline, this approach offers a powerful complement to traditional microscopy and a promising path toward modernizing food safety testing and contamination analysis.
